I fear or suspect that my device is infected with malware

Spam, malware, phishing and other criminal e-mails are regularly sent via hacked mail servers or infected home computers of unsuspecting users, which makes it considerably more difficult to trace them.

For some time now, there has been an increase in e-mails with fake senders circulating, each of which refers to a fictitious order, delivery, invoice or payment - sometimes also to lawsuits or court proceedings to frighten the recipient. In these cases, the included link or attachment is followed by malicious software (a "virus").

So don't open the attached file under any circumstances, don't click on any link and delete such emails immediately. The scammers keep coming up with new scenarios to trick the recipients into reacting carelessly.

If you suspect that your computer has been infected (e.g. if the attachment in question has been opened), we recommend that you contact a computer specialist who will examine your computer and clean it or reinstall the operating system if necessary. You should NOT use e-banking with the affected device until it has been analized and cleaned or reinstalled. At the same time, it is highly recommended that you check your transfers daily so that you can immediately intervene with your bank in the event of future abusive transfers.  Even if you could not observe anything conspicuous, the Trojan could have installed itself - this typically happens in the background. Unfortunately, MELANI cannot offer individual IT support and we cannot judge remotely whether an infection has actually taken place.

Unauthorized intrusion into a data processing system (Art. 143 bis CC) and the spread of malware are criminal offences that are prosecuted by the police. Accordingly, we recommend that you report this to your local cantonal police. They will then initiate the necessary investigations. It is advisable to take with you all the information/data collected on this case for reporting.
